World Environment Day (WED) is a yearly event held on 5th June to raise global awareness of the need to take positive action on environmental protection. WED is undertaken by the United Nations Environment programme (UNEP). It is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness on the need to protect our environment and enhances political attention and action. This year the theme chosen by the UNEP to observe the day was “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

We celebrated WED on Tuesday, the 5th June, 2018. To mark this occasion, the students and the teachers held an awareness march from the school campus to the nearby locality. It was inaugurated by teacher Mrs. Aruna in a creative way by opening a basket filled with eco friendly products. The theme – ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ was highlighted on the backdrop. The students of class IX A organised a short programme at 11.30 A.M in the school auditorium with a devotional prayer service, followed by a welcome dance. A skit on reducing plastic pollution ‘chodo plastic par nirbhar hona’ was enacted by the students. Different types of pollution were also highlighted through a dance which was greatly applauded by all. A song was sung by the students which gave a message to use cloth bags instead of plastic bags.

Pledge to reduce plastic in the school was taken by all the teachers and the students which was led by Sr. Sarika, the Principal of the school. She also encouraged the students to reuse, refuse and reduce plastic products in their daily lives. The objectives for celebrating WED were highlighted to the students to make them more sensitive towards environment protection and she advised them to bring steel water bottles instead of plastic bottles.

Sr. Sylvette, the retired Professor of Geography, enlightened the students regarding plastic pollutions that destroy the earth with the help of a short video on harm caused by the plastics when ingested by animals. The programme came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by the student of class IXA.
